I had great expectations for "Law of the Jungle" -- an exhibit of diverse artwork from Brazil on the theme of survival. I was quite disappointed, though. Except or the Os Gemeos piece, there was little that compared in substance or quality to what I saw this past summer in the streets of Sao Paulo.

I stopped by the Perry Rubenstein Gallery on my way home to check out the Faile exhibit, "Bedtime Stories." It's brilliant! Bomb Shelters in Sderot, Israel
The bomb shelters in Israel's southern town of Sdeot were transformed into vibrant works of art by a group of graffiti artists from Israel and abroad earlier this year. Curious about this town that had become the target of rocket attacks from Gaza in 2007, I was glad to have the opportunity to visit it with my photographer friend, Leora Cheshin, earlier this month.

Word To Mother @ StolenSpace
While ambling through Brick Lane -- a street where East and West (with their opposing sensibilities) collide -- I came upon the StolenSpace Gallery and discovered the work of Word to Mother. Currently based in London, he creates clever -- somewhat biting -- images on salvaged pieces of wood. I loved every piece in this exhibit!
Miss Bugs @ Moniker Art Fair
One of my favorite stopovers when I travel back from Tel Aviv to NYC is London. This time I hit the city in the midst of several art fairs and events. The one event I did check out was the preview to the Moniker Art Fair. Though it's difficult to look at, appreciate and document artwork in such settings, it was worthwhile. Most of the work was strong and interesting. The space was packed and folks seemed to be buying art. I noticed red dots next to pieces by Swoon and Elbow Toe when I first entered. I much prefer the streets, but I understand the need/value to the commercial end of this all.

David Kinsey @ Joshua Liner
I don't think I've ever been disappointed by an exhibit at Joshua Liner. It's one of the handful of galleries in Chelsea that always works for me. But this particular exhibit of David Kinsey's work is one of my favorites. I love just about every piece -- the rawness, colors, flow and texture. The exhibit continues through October 9th at 548 W. 28th Street.

Sukkah of the Signs
This afternoon, we went to Union Square Park to check out the 12 structures by the "Sukkah City" finalists. Though some were stunning and all were impressive, this one is my personal favorite. The two designers, Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, constructed this Sukkah from cardboard signs they had purchased from homeless folks. I love the concept of the Sukkah -- a temporary shelter -- as a reminder of (or homage to) those who don't have a roof over their heads.

Last summer when I was in Paris, I couldn't find a single Blek le Rat stencil in the streets. But thanks to a small article in today's New York Times, I discovered that he recently left his mark on one of the walls in the Meatpacking District. On my way home from Hamilton Fish yesterday, I stopped by the "Spain Loves New York" event at the Room Mate Grace Hotel in mid-town. Among the artwork on exhibit in conjunction with the launching of the Spanish culture Babylon Magazine were three pieces -- "Between a Bull and a Matador" -- by Native, an extraordinary artist now based in Paris.

Despite the rain, Tara and I made it out to the NYC 2010 Meeting of Styles held at 5Pointz. Tara took over a hundred amazing photos -- including this one -- before I even arrived. The only folks more passionate about graffiti than us were the guys painting in this weather! And there were many. 'so cool to meet the folks behind some of the work/styles I've been admiring. Return to Red Hook Wall
When I was in Red Hook yesterday, I returned to visit the wall I had last seen over a year ago. I was surprised to see few changes and just about everything looking as fresh as it had in June 2009.

A few years back, Nelson aka Cekis told me that he was painting a storefront in East Harlem. I hadn't thought about it -- until I passed it by chance this past Thursday. It is fabulous!

Brooklyn Bombs

Onesto in Sao Paulo

Sara and I came upon this Os Gemeos mural outside Sao Paulo's Museum of Modern Art. As always, the details are amazing and the entire effect is magical! Strange, though, that MAM's book store did not have a single book on street art!

The Neverending MBW Extravaganza Still On
I stopped by MBW's Icons exhibit yesterday. Though it supposedly ends at the end of this month, it's beginning to feel like a permanent Meatpacking District installation. Anyway -- once again there are endless new variations on the same themes and lots of folks passing through. I know MBW's "playing" us, but I'm still intrigued by it all!

Chris Stain in Beacon, NY
'rode the Metro North -- for the first time in years -- up to Beacon, NY yesterday to check out Whisper at work on his upcoming exhibit "Four Ever." While there, I walked some distance over to the the space at 510 Main Street to view the outdoor Electric Walls exhibit. Much of it didn't work for me -- as many of the pieces lost the spirit of street art. They looked far too manufactured for the particular space.But the Chris Stain pieces across the street are stunning. They, alone, were worth the trek up there.

Michael Anderson Sticker Installation
'walked by the ACE Hotel to check out both the Shepard Fairey and the Mint & Serf murals -- both still looking good -- though somewhat ravaged. The biggest surprise, though, was in the hotel's lobby -- an amazing sticker installation by Michael Anderson. According to the info a woman at the desk gave me, Anderson is an artist/designer (and more) who has collected over 40,000 graffiti stickers! Among the stickers on exhibit are some real classics like Twist, Obey and ESPO, The Ace is at 20 West 29th St.
